What is a Trade License?
A Trade License (Živnostenské oprávnění) is an ordinary sheet of paper with personal data, a unique identification number (IČ), selected area of trades the license can operate in and a stamp from the Czech authorities.
What can you do with a Trade License?
The Trade License allows us to run self-employment business in the Czech Republic. Apart from a company, with a Trade License we are running the business under our own name.
The Visa/Residence permit and the trade license?
If the purpose of staying in the Czech Republic is business, a trade license is one of the major documents necessary for a visa/residence permit application.
What are the areas we can conduct business in?
A trade license allows us to operate in 80 unqualified/free trades (for example Retail, Accommodation, English teaching, Photography), 17 craft trades (Locksmith, Goldsmith, Brewery) and 32 professional trades (Driving instructor, Masseur, Accounting consultancy). How to get a Trade License in the Czech Republic?
Who can apply for a Trading License?
There are only 3 general requirements for getting a trading license
Minimum age of 18 years
Clear criminal record
Required Documents for Unqualified trades
To get a trading license we are required to prepare 1000 CZK administrative fee and documents listed below:
Passport or ID (EU citizens)
Proof of business address – confirmation from the landlord (Nájemní smlouva)
List of trades
Criminal Record Check translated into Czech (Výpis z trestního rejstříku)
The Criminal Record translation and all other translated documents must be super-legalized at e.g. Czech Point or Czech Post.
For craft and professional trades, related education and experience is required.

Simple Step by Step Guide
Prepare the needed documents and their apostilled translation
Submit the documents to the nearest Trade License authority (Živnostenský obor - for the list of authorities click here)
After 3-5 business days, collect your Temporary Trade License
Apply for your business visa with the Temporary Trade License
Collect the Visa after 2-3months
Register with Foreign Police (Cizinecká policie) (link) and get your address verified with a stamp.
Show the verification stamp of your address to the Trade License Authority and get the real Trade License
Register for taxes and social insurance
In case you are an EU citizen or already possess a visa
Prepare the documents needed and their apostilled translation
Submit the documents to the nearest Trade License authority (for the list of authorities click here)
After 3-5 business days, collect the real Trade License
Register for taxes, health and social insurance
Trade License Authorities are usually open just on Mondays and Fridays
Temporary Trade License DOES NOT allow you to conduct business
The Temporary Trade License expires in case you can not have your visa approved within 180 days
You can have a person represent you throughout the whole process with a power of attorney (Plná Moc).
